On compassion and Homeless

On Compassion

“But for now, in this last gasp of autumn warmth, he is still.”

I like this quote because to me it seems that the author is trying to say, even though the man has nowhere to go, he is grateful that snow has not come in yet, because when it does he does not know what he will do. Who will he survive? But for right now at this moment he is glad he can still walk the streets.

“If expulsion were motivation she would not reward his arrival with gifts of food.”

I like this quote, basically what it is saying is that you can tell the women is not angry because the man shows up everyday, she is just basically helping the man out because he needs it, because she probably thinks if I don’t help him, who else will? The world need more people out there who are willing to go out of their way for others.

“You hear more cocktail party complaints than usual, “I just can’t take New York anymore.”

This is most definitely my favorite quote, because what it is saying is that each day more and higher society people are complaining about the way their city is going, which is a bad way. The way I feel is that they should stop all the complaining, talking, and get off their high butts and do something about it to make it better.

Homeless

“People find it curious that those without homes would rather sleep sitting up on benches or huddled in doorways than go to shelters.”

This quote represents how hard it is to be homeless. Many don’t understand the struggle these people go through day to day, and that just because there are shelters doesn’t mean they can get in easily because they are homeless. With shelters it’s a process of whether you’ll get in or not, a process of first come first serve so many people are turned away for shelters become full. So many people have no choice but to sleep on benches or doorways.

“It has been customary to take people’s pain and lessen our own participation in it by turning it into an issue.”

I like this quote, because I feel it is so true. A lot of people would rather not try to get involved with the homeless and their struggle. But they would rather blow it up more and have everyone exposed to it and talk about it like it, but no one is stepping up to the plate to try and help these people out. So all they do is talk about it and make it bigger than what it is.

“They are not homeless. They are people who have no homes.”

I like this quote because it is saying that we label homeless people something they are not, and just because they have no home to go to everyday so they are homeless. But they do have a home which is where they are at that moment. Many think that makes them less of a human being, because they have no one place to call home or something of their own to call theirs.
